Just two weeks before the World Cup, Peruvian soccer fans received the news they had been praying for: Striker Paolo Guerrero, the team’s best player and all-time leading scorer, was authorized to play in Russia despite a doping ban. The No. 11 team in the world already boasted a stellar defense, and with Guerrero, 34, and Jefferson Farfan, 33, playing alongside one another in attack, La Blanquirroja could make a long run. Noteworthy: Thirty-six years have passed since Peru last qualified for a World Cup—the longest absence for any team in Russia.
