Defender Rafa Marquez, 39, has a chance to become just the third man to play in five World Cups—but that’s almost an afterthought given that the U.S. Treasury Department has accused Marquez of ties to drug traffickers. (Many pundits were surprised to see Marquez’ name on coach Juan Carlos Osorio’s 23-man roster.) Marquez may be Mexico’s emotional leader but the team is built around a dynamic attacking trio: Carlos Vela, Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, and Hirving “Chucky” Lozano. The United States and Mexico are bitter rivals on the field but there is a distinctly American feel to El Tri’s roster since Vela (LAFC), Giovani dos Santos (LA Galaxy), and Jonathan dos Santos (LA Galaxy) all play in Major League Soccer.
