Mohamed Salah, sometimes called the “Egyptian Messi,” suffered a shoulder injury in the Champions League final on May 26 as his team, Liverpool, fell to Real Madrid. Will he recover in time to lead the Pharaohs against Uruguay, Egypt’s first (and toughest) opponent in the group stage? It’s hard to say at this point. It’s also hard to imagine Egypt accomplishing much without its superstar striker. Salah scored 32 goals for Liverpool this season, tops in the English Premier League, but his World Cup supporting cast is not nearly as gifted. Even if Salah misses the Uruguay match, he could return to face Russia and Saudi Arabia and help the North African nation advance.
