When the best in the world step on the court, the game is one part ballet and three parts open warfare.

Mention badminton, and most of us probably picture a sagging net in a backyard with Aunt Phyllis and Uncle Ted casually knocking a shuttlecock back and forth while trying not to spill their gin and tonics. After all, how intense can a game be when the key piece of equipment is called a birdie? Well, judging by these photos of competitors at the BWF (Badminton World Federation) World Championships in Nanjing, China, the answer is clear: very, very intense.
