On Thursday, June 21, First Lady Melania Trump made an unannounced visit to Upbring New Hope Children's Center in the border town of McAllen, Texas. The facility, operated by Lutheran Social Services of the South and contracted by the Department of Health and Human Services, is a former nursing home-turned-shelter that currently houses nearly 60 children between the ages of 12 and 17. While many of them are unaccompanied minors, six were reportedly separated from their parents at the border.
Trump's visit follows her husband's executive order on Wednesday, reversing his earlier, much derided policy of separating immigrant parents and children at the border. "She wants to see what's real," the first lady's spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told CNN. "She wanted to see as close to what she had been seeing on TV."
