First Lady Melania Trump Visits Immigrant Detention Center On U.S. Border

What Was Melania Trump Doing at the Border?

With the White House under fire for its immigration policies, the first lady flies to Texas.

On Thursday, June 21, First Lady Melania Trump made an unannounced visit to Upbring New Hope Children's Center in the border town of McAllen, Texas. The facility, operated by Lutheran Social Services of the South and contracted by the Department of Health and Human Services, is a former nursing home-turned-shelter that currently houses nearly 60 children between the ages of 12 and 17. While many of them are unaccompanied minors, six were reportedly separated from their parents at the border.

Trump's visit follows her husband's executive order on Wednesday, reversing his earlier, much derided policy of separating immigrant parents and children at the border. "She wants to see what's real," the first lady's spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told CNN. "She wanted to see as close to what she had been seeing on TV."

Perhaps not coincidentally, the Texas town was also the site of the now-infamous shot of the 2-year-old Honduran girl crying out for her mother, which has come to symbolize the inhumanity of the Trump administration's separation policy. Do u?" About the jacket, Trump's spokeswoman told CNN: "It's a jacket. There was no hidden message. After today's important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn't going to choose to focus on her wardrobe." However, President Trump later tweeted: "'I REALLY DON'T CARE, DO U?' written on the back of Melania's jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!"
