Trump and Putin Meet In Helsinki

U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a summit at Finland’s Presidential Palace in Helsinki on Monday. The first formal meeting between the two leaders, it marks the end of President Trump’s seven-day visit to Europe where he met with NATO allies and Queen Elizabeth II. It also comes at a particularly fraught moment, only three days after 12 Russian intelligence agents were indicted by the U.S. Justice Department on charges of hacking Hillary Clinton's campaign for president and the Democratic National Committee.

Here, photos from Trump and Putin's summit in Helsinki.

At their joint press conference after the summit, Trump tosses a World Cup soccer ball given to him by Putin to First Lady Melania Trump. During the conference, Trump disagreed with the U.S. intelligence community's conclusion that Russia interfered in the 2016 election. &quot;I have great confidence in my intelligence people, but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today,&quot; <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/16/world/europe/trump-putin-election-intelligence.html"target="_blank">he said</a> at one point. Trump's performance received condemnation from many in his own party, including Speaker of the House Paul Ryan who <a href="https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/trump-putin-helsinki/index.html"target="_blank">released a statement</a> following the conference that read, &quot; The president must appreciate that Russia is not our ally. There is no moral equivalence between the United States and Russia, which remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals.&quot; Mikhail Svetlov/Getty Images At their joint press conference after the summit, Trump tosses a World Cup soccer ball given to him by Putin to First Lady Melania Trump.
