MTV VMAs Fashion We'll Never Forget

From snake accessories to meat dresses, a look back at the most unforgettable outfits.

A party more than an awards show since its inaugural year in 1984, the MTV Video Music Awards has long been a fashion free-for-all where celebrities are encouraged to go all-in on risky looks. From Lil’ Kim’s unforgettable jumpsuit (pictured above) to the meat dress seen around the world, here's a look back at the vanguard of high-drama VMAs style.

But the artist who made history was 26-year-old Madonna, who showed up in a white lace ensemble complete with the (now iconic) “Boy Toy” belt buckle. That night’s performance of “Like a Virgin” would solidify her spot as VMAs royalty for years to come. It was a good year for the Irish singer, who took home Best Music Video for her cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U," as well as Best Female Video and Best Post-Modern Music Video.
