Cannes Classics: 5 Style Icons Who Stole the Show

From Bardot to Birkin – a look back at the most stylish Cannes beauties.

For the last 70 years, international stars have descended upon the French Riviera for a weekend of film, fun, and, of course, fashion. Here, a look back at five classic style icons who stood out from the crowd.

BRIGITTE BARDOT: LA BOMBSHELL RDA/RETIRED/Getty Images BRIGITTE BARDOT: LA BOMBSHELL Perhaps the embodiment of French femininity, Bardot showed up at Cannes in 1953 as a relatively unknown starlet but left as a full-fledged sex symbol. Whether she was working on her beach tan or hanging with Picasso, the French siren was never far from the festival action (or cameras). Bardot runs barefoot on the beach in Cannes, circa 1956. GRACE KELLY: AMERICAN CLASSIC Hulton Archive/Getty Images GRACE KELLY: AMERICAN CLASSIC Kelly's timeless style was always on full display at Cannes, but it was during her 1955 trip that she caught the eye of her future husband, Prince Rainier III, forever changing the American actress's life. Less than a year after this photo was taken, she would become Princess Grace of Monaco. Kelly snaps photos from a docked boat in 1955. SOPHIA LOREN: BEDAZZLED RDA/RETIRED/Getty Images SOPHIA LOREN: BEDAZZLED No stranger to glitz and glamour, Italian actress Sophia Loren brought her A-game to Cannes time and time again. Of course, she also brought diamonds, fur, and more diamonds. Loren wearing jewels by Van Cleef and Arpels in 1966. RDA/RETIRED/Getty Images Loren wearing jewels by Van Cleef and Arpels in 1966. JANE BIRKIN: TRÈS SIMPLE AFP/AFP/Getty Images JANE BIRKIN: TRÈS SIMPLE Birkin's Cannes style can be summed up in two words: effortlessly cool. Her festival outfit of choice? A white t-shirt and jeans, plus blunt bangs and that endearing gap-toothed smile. What's the French word for perfection? Birkin caught snapping, 1975.
