Mama's Boys at the Academy Awards

The hottest red-carpet accessory? Mom!

How to repay the woman who gave birth to you and sat through your sixth-grade production of "The King and I?" For some, the answer is taking her on the biggest date night of her life: to the Academy Awards. Whether it was because they were single or simply had a soft spot, many an actor (and director!) has taken dear old mom to the ceremony. In fact, here are 22 of them. (Pictured: Michael Fassbender with mom Adelle at the 2014 Oscars.)

Tom Cruise, 1990 Ron Galella, Ltd./WireImage Tom Cruise, 1990 The “Born on the Fourth of July” star may not have won for his performance in the Oliver Stone film, but Cruise was in control with mom Mary Lou South by his side. Denzel Washington, 1990 Ron Galella/WireImage Denzel Washington, 1990 The actor, nominated for his role in “Glory,” marched onto the red carpet flanked by wife Pauletta and mother Lennis. Clint Eastwood, 1993 Ron Galella, Ltd./WireImage Clint Eastwood, 1993 Proving you’re never too old to be a mama’s boy, the then-62-year-old actor/director — nominated multiple times over for “Unforgiven” — brought mom Margaret Ruth Runner (in addition to co-star and girlfriend Frances Fisher) to the proceedings in 1993. Runner would again accompany her son to the ceremony more than 10 years later in 2004. Steven Spielberg, 1993 Time Life Pictures/The LIFE Picture Collection/Getty Images Steven Spielberg, 1993 An Oscar for each date! Spielberg, a two-time winner for “Schindler’s List,” was accompanied by two pretty ladies: wife Kate Capshaw and mother Leah Adler. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, 1998 Jim Smeal/WireImage Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, 1998 For their first Oscars, the “Good Will Hunting” duo not only brought moms Chris Affleck and Nancy Carlson-Paige as their dates, but also shouted them out while accepting their best original screenplay statues: “The most beautiful women here!” yelled Affleck. Joaquin Phoenix, 2001 LUCY NICHOLSON/AFP/Getty Images Joaquin Phoenix, 2001 The “Gladiator” actor showed heart on the red carpet — as in his dear mom Heart. Javier Bardem, 2001 Kevin Winter/Getty Images Javier Bardem, 2001 Before Penelope, there was Pilar. Bardem’s mother has accompanied him to the ceremony a handful of times — making her debut in 2001, when the actor was nominated for “Before Night Falls.” Adrien Brody, 2003 Dan MacMedan/WireImage Adrien Brody, 2003 Before memorably (and awkwardly) planting a kiss on presenter Halle Berry while accepting his Oscar for “The Pianist,” Brody cuddled up to parents Elliot Brody and Sylvia Plachy. Sean Penn, 2004 JEFF HAYNES/AFP/Getty Images Sean Penn, 2004 Another double dater, the “Mystic River” star brought then-wife Robin Wright and always-mom Eileen Ryan. Jude Law, 2004 L. Cohen/WireImage Jude Law, 2004 Hey, Jude’s mom! Maggie Law, the “Cold Mountain” nominee, and his then-girlfriend Sienna Miller made for quite the red-carpet trio. Ryan Gosling, 2007 Chris Polk/FilmMagic Ryan Gosling, 2007 Now a family man and father of two, Gosling was just a bachelor back in 2007 when he invited mom Donna and sister Mandi as his dates to the Oscars, where he was nominated for his performance in “Half Nelson.” Colin Farrell, 2008 Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Colin Farrell, 2008 Irish eyes were smiling on the Oscars presenter in 2008 — specifically, mom Rita’s. Justin Timberlake, 2011 John Shearer/Getty Images Justin Timberlake, 2011 The “Social Network” star was totally in-sync with his date: mama Lynn Harless. “You gotta bring your mom!” Timberlake said on the carpet. Bradley Cooper, 2013 Steve Granitz/WireImage Bradley Cooper, 2013 Bradley Cooper’s mom isn’t a regular mom, she’s a cool mom. The proof? Just check out her feet! Instead of sky-high heels, Gloria opted for a pair of comfy black sneaks. Rock on, Mrs. Cooper. Matthew McConaughey, 2014 Jason Merritt/TERM/Getty Images Matthew McConaughey, 2014 Dubbed K-Mac by the “Dallas Buyers Club” star, 81-year-old Kay McConaughey has been known to out-party her Academy Award-winning son (also pictured beside wife Camila Alves). Leonardo DiCaprio, 2014 FREDERIC J. BROWN/AFP/Getty Images Leonardo DiCaprio, 2014 Victoria’s Secret models the world over surely let out a collective sob when the “Wolf of Wall Street” star opted for a slightly older red-carpet companion: his mom, Irmelin Indenbirken. Jared Leto, 2014 Ethan Miller/WireImage Jared Leto, 2014 The 2014 Oscars were a family affair for the “Dallas Buyers Club” actor, who was accompanied by brother Shannon and mom Constance. We now see where he got such great hair… Common, 2015 Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic Common, 2015 Is there a doctor in the house? Yep, Common’s mom, Dr. Mahalia Ann Hines — a Chicago educator who holds a doctorate from the University of Illinois. Jacob Tremblay, 2016 Gregg DeGuire/WireImage Jacob Tremblay, 2016 Bringing your mommy as your Oscars date is an obvious choice when you’re not old enough to drive. The 9-year-old “Room” star was chauffeured by parents Christina and Jason, who may have inadvertently upstaged their pint-sized performer — at least in the eyes of the internet. Lin-Manuel Miranda, 2017 ROBYN BECK/AFP/Getty Images Lin-Manuel Miranda, 2017 Luz Towns-Miranda predicted her son would one day be nominated for an Oscar and made Lin-Manuel vow that when that day came she’d be his date. Miranda kept his word in 2017 when he was nominated for best original song for “How Far I’ll Go” (from “Moana”). Dev Patel, 2017 VALERIE MACON/AFP/Getty Images Dev Patel, 2017 Nominated for his turn in “Lion,” about a man searching for the family he lost, Patel brought mom Anita to the ceremony. We’ll let you decide who was better dressed.
