George Clooney: Photos From a Star-Studded Tribute

The Hollywood icon receives the Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute.

Actor. Writer. Producer. Director. Oscar Winner. Sexiest Man Alive. He may be only 57 years old, but George Clooney has at least three lifetimes' worth of achievements to his name. And so it is that the "old soul" (as presenter Shirley MacLaine called him) was recognized by the American Film Institute on Thursday evening in Hollywood. The guest list was, as you can imagine, star-studded and the remarks were both humorous and touching. Here, a look at Clooney's big night. The NBC medical drama "ER" would be his true breakout, and "Friends" actors Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston couldn't help but take a little credit. "There were millions of people watching 'Friends,' who happened to stay there, too lazy to turn the channel (and then watched) 'ER,'" joked Cox. "Without us, you're 'Chicago Hope,' buddy!" (Clooney also appeared on an episode of "Friends" alongside "ER" co-star Noah Wyle.) FIRST AID Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Turner FIRST AID Clooney's "ER" co-star Julianna Margulies recalled how her character was supposed to die from a drug overdose in the pilot episode but then Clooney went to bat for her. Margulies would star on the long-running series for six seasons.
