What Is It With Actresses and Trees, Anyway?

We can't explain the phenomenon. But we're thankful for it.

Around the globe, trees serve as powerful, versatile symbols: living emblems of both renewal and permanence. Some cultures venerate trees as the dwelling places of divine beings ― or as divine beings in their own right. Maybe it's no surprise, then, that powerful, versatile actresses (sometimes mistaken for divine beings themselves) are drawn to trees. Here is just a sapling ― er, sampling ― of photos featuring actresses posing with strong, leafy friends.

Finally, here is the wonderful Jean Arthur, posing as Peter Pan with the remains of a tree. Fun fact: When she taught drama at Vassar later in life, one of Arthur's students was a young Meryl Streep. There is no record of Streep ever playing a tree. But we suspect that, had she ever taken the role of a beech, oak, chestnut, or ash, she would have nailed the accent.
